Lesson Plan: How to Write and Pronounce the first letter in the Arabic alphabet ا

Grade Level: Beginner/Elementary (Arabic as a Foreign Language)

Objective:

Students will learn to write and pronounce the letter ا correctly in Arabic.

Students will learn to recognize the letter ا in written and spoken Arabic words.

Students will practice writing and pronouncing words that contain the letter ا.

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers

  • Handouts with practice words

  • Audio recording of the pronunciation of the letter ا

  • Arabic alphabet chart


Procedure:

Introduction:

Greet students and introduce the letter ا as the first letter in the Arabic alphabet.

Show students an Arabic alphabet chart and point out the letter ا.

Explain the four forms of Arabic letters:

  1. When you write the letter in an isolated form.

  2. When you write the letter at the beginning of the word “Initial”.

  3. When you write the letter in the middle of a word the word is “Medial”.

  4. When you write the letter at the end of the word “Final”.

Explain that the letter ا is pronounced like the English letter "ah" and is used in many Arabic words.

Teaching:

Write the letter ا on the whiteboard and demonstrate how to write it. Explain that the letter ا is written in one stroke from top to bottom.

Ask students to practice writing the letter ا on their own using their notebooks.

Play an audio recording of the pronunciation of the letter ا and ask students to repeat after the recording.

Write several Arabic words on the whiteboard that contain the letter ا, such as اسم, ابن, امرأة. Have students practice pronouncing these words aloud. See more examples below.

Hand out practice sheets with words that contain the letter ا and ask students to write and pronounce the words on their own.

Practice:

Divide students into pairs or small groups and have them practice writing and pronouncing words that contain the letter ا.
